About Me

I'm a recent graduate of the University of Tennessee, with a BFA in art. I'm working on my portfolio for graduate school, and these are my projects from undergrad. I'm more a conceptualist than an aesthetician- My artwork is less about image, and more about object. I'm leaning towards minimalism and formalism right now, addressing the basic language of visual communication, like line, plane, color and shading, 2d and 3d. But I've addressed everything from humorous 'what if' animal situations to pottery in my journey as an artist. I hope some of these pieces make you laugh, and some of them make you think, but I really worked really hard on them all!

Porcupine Egg

a wood-burned wooden egg, with burn-striped toothpicks.
Porcupine eggs are technically what my grandma calls the seedpods of a certain tree, but what if porcupines actually laid eggs? would they look like this?

Scary Bible Stories Watercolors

This series was an exploration into the contrast between the children's versions of bible stories and the actual reality of what they're describing.
Daniel and the Lion's Den, Noah and the Ark, and Jonah and the Big Fish.
9x12" watercolors on paper- and I'm saving up to get high-res scans and giclee prints made too! this is one of my more popular series.

Pelican Princess

This piece was mostly an experiment in cut paper texture.
It's about 5x5", with cut 'woodgrain' background, textured tissue paper collar, and all those little feathers are individually cut! with a gold leaf beak. She's a princess.

Lizard Wizards

This painting started out as an abstract exercise (starting with triangles and shading practice), then we turned it semi-figural using the results of the exercise as inspiration.
It is a 4x5' canvas, oil paint. I actually painted over it, since the investment of the canvas was worth more to me than the actual painting...

Dove Chocolate Square

This is a canvas covered in Dove Milk Chocolate Candy wrappers (lettering cut out). I'd been saving them for years. This piece is 18x24" and took over 60 hours and entire tube of Elmer's glue to attach all the little pieces of foil!
I love mechanical process and using unconventional materials to negate the time I spend creating a piece- to start a conversation about the value of abstract art.
This piece actually is much more deep royal blue/violet, with a delicate glow in even low light. Completely impossible to photograph.

Lucas Portrait

This is Lucas, my friend from art school, making a face. This piece is made of chalk pastel and gesso on paper, and is almost 40" tall on paper. The words on the side are a Bible verse that was inspiring me at the time.

Ceramics Hand

This is the hand of the witch from Hansel and Gretel, reaching out of the wall to feel your finger to see if you're fat enough to eat yet.
I was experimenting with the idea of the wall as a barrier between this world and another world- a series that didn't really get up off the ground...
It's ceramic, with painted skin and real nail polished nails. It also stands on its end, reaching up, and is excellent for holding things like keys.
It weighs about 60 pounds, so I couldn't hang it on the wall like I planned, but it's still pretty scary! featuring cellulite, calluses, and even warts!
